The real problem
Attracting creative communities depends on identity.
Creative people gravitate toward meaning and symbols. Without a recognisable cultural signal, even the most ambitious developments remain abstract.
A creative city needs a reference point. Something people orient around emotionally: arrival, belonging, return.

The sculpture
Earth Sentinels — the gateway in daylight
Earth Sentinels are two colossal busts (45 feet / ~14 metres), crafted in concrete, conceived as a gateway and a signal of guardianship. They hold a specific message: presence, courage, and responsibility in stewardship of the earth.
The artist, Daniel Popper, is a South African multidisciplinary sculptor known for monumental public works that connect the human figure with nature and the sacred.
This gave the project its first advantage: a form strong enough to become a symbol.
Our job was to ensure the symbol also holds up as an experience system.

The sculpture
Earth Sentinels — the gateway in daylight
Earth Sentinels are two colossal busts (45 feet / ~14 metres), crafted in concrete, conceived as a gateway and a signal of guardianship. They hold a specific message: presence, courage, and responsibility in stewardship of the earth.

We defined what the landmark needed to do for the city. The insight was clear: attracting creators requires a place with a soul.
Earth Sentinels had to function as:

The narrative was structured as a sequence of states, allowing people to enter the experience at any moment, without prior context or explanation. The arc moves through awareness and presence, toward dissolution, emptiness, and renewal.
This approach allowed the experience to remain legible over time, supporting repeated encounters and long-term resonance.

We embedded the mapping concept as narrative logic into the sculpture’s presence.

System Engineering
Projection equipment integrated into the sculpture’s hand
Engineering decisions were guided by perception first. We focused on how the sculpture would be read as a whole — during the day and at night. External equipment mounted around the object would have disrupted that reading and fragmented the experience.
To preserve visual continuity, we asked Daniel to add hands to the sculpture. They became a natural extension of the form and allowed the projection equipment to be integrated discreetly.
This single decision changed everything. Technology disappeared into the sculpture itself, keeping the experience smooth, coherent, and visually uninterrupted.
The system itself was engineered for real-world operation: high-brightness laser projectors with defined placement geometry, controlled angles, weather-protected housing, and calibrated surface brightness — all tuned to human viewing conditions.
The result was consistent perception, controlled presence, and reliable performance in an open, tropical environment.
